Color in Context 1
I’m fascinated by the connotations (and thereby, limitations) we assign to color. I can readily come up with four occasions where these associations limited the outcome of a design project: 1. a client suggesting that “purple only belongs in 6-year-old girls’ bedrooms” (Ack! c’mon) 2. a professor of mine derisively labeling every green “Goat Vomit” (which is brilliant, if annoying) 3. every design with pink being shot down as “overly feminine” and 4. the curse of the combination of green and red suggesting holiday cheer. So here is a fun counterexample to the 3rd: A pink spitfire.
According to the Reddit post where I found the photo (Link in the photo’s caption (I know, not the most reliable of sources)), these beauties were kitted out for reconnaissance, painted pink to blend in with the sunrise and sunset.
And wasn’t just the air force dipping into the pink paint bucket. Lord Mountbatten painted his ships pink with the same goal of camouflage. As such, the color is named after him.
So there you go. Pretty cool.
